As part of our Family Friday Missions a couple of weeks ago, the girls and I planned a play date. During the planning, we decided to make it a Christmas play date since it was just a couple of days away. It was meant to be a simple, easy, and no stress play date. Something where we could get together with friends and have a good time. With it being so close to the holiday parties, people leaving town, recitals, etc., we decided to leave it open to “come when you can” between 2-5pm. So, we had friends coming and going the whole time.
For snacks we decided to go with cupcakes, pirouline vienne waffers – mainly cause my little ones really likes them and to me they just LOOK so “Christmasy” for whatever reason, some candy canes, green and red jello, and we had hot cocoa available for those who might want some, simple. So, simple, that I actually FORGOT about the hot cocoa! LOL The kids were going in the fridge and getting other stuff, so I just left them alone, and forgot about the other stuff… I must say, it was nice to sit and just chat with my friends. :)
The kids were all having fun playing and we had a mini gift exchange (everyone brought in a small something from the dollar store or similar…nothing overly expensive). The gifts were placed under the tree when they came in to the house… after playing for a bit, they gathered around the tree and everyone grabbed a present, something other than what they had brought. They were SO excited and happy. Sometimes, I really do think that adults make a bigger deal of things than kids do… they really can be content with such simple things!
It was a wonderful day with friends, both for my girls and myself. And, I want to thank my friends who were able to make it. I know some couldn’t because it was last minute, there were other plans already in place, and one little princess was sick and couldn’t make it. SO, this just means we might have to start planning our play dates a little more often again in 2012. Thinking of something cool for January… to my friends: I’ll keep you posted. :)
This is a bit of a side post because I wanted to share it. :) We live in a two story house. Last year I decorated the Christmas tree downstairs because I wanted it to look neater than the years past when the girls did it themselves… so I got them a tree upstairs that they got to decorate. Their tree is the one that could be seen outside from a window, and they liked that idea. The girls were sharing a room last year as well and they had a little tree in their room, but this year they have decided to separate into their own rooms and each wanted a tree. Since I wasn’t going to be purchasing a new tree each, we decided to make some. This always gives us the chance to have another activity, get creative, have something unique that each person likes, and it’s “usually” more economical. This is how the girls made their trees….
Then the girls had friends over yesterday and we decided that we should make something… so we made some girly wreaths to go along with their trees…. Everything was from the dollar store… the green foam round –$1 each–is for floral, but we used it and plan on using it and changing it according to season or holiday from now on. Right now, we used 1 feather boa around it $1 each, then a loofah sponge at the top as decoration (in lieu of a bow)–these came 6 for $1!!!!– some hair clips –2/$1–, pig tails –8/$1—, a lip gloss –2/$1—, and some cute little rose soaps –8 roses or so for $1–, that the girls thought were the coolest thing! :)
The girls really liked them… mine have theirs hanging off their bedroom doors, and I was told by my friend that her girls are looking forward to getting some wreath hangers today so they can hang theirs too. Here’s what those look like:
A cute project, keeps them busy for a bit, they LOVE all the girly stuff, it’s not a very expensive project, and they get to keep all the stuff and use it after Christmas. My girls got to have fun with their friend and the girls got to take their craft home and they’ll be able to use it all after. Pretty neat.
Last week we planned a playdate, dinner, or party… it’s time to have fun! We’re having our playdate today! Not all of our friends can make it, understandbly so… some are already starting to head out of town, some are busy with other previously set arrangements, etc. But, we do have some friends joining us and it’s always fun to get together with any friends. :-)
I’ll be posting more info on the play date soon, for now we have to get some last minute things ready. It’s a Christmas themed play date, we’re getting some themed snacks and fun stuff like that. Can’t wait!
I hope some of you are continuing to follow the missions on Fridays and you are having fun with your family and friends today as well. Let me know if you are doing it as well and what your family decided to go with. :)
